What Is RSS?

What is RSS? RSS icon
RSS is a smart utility that makes it easy for you to get up-to-date information about anything online without much ado. Once you subscribe to an RSS feed, everything they publish is automatically delivered to you without your having to check with them.

RSS (an Abbreviation) Stands for:

  • Really Simple Syndication
Sometimes also:

  • Rich Site Summary
  • Real-time Simple Syndication

 Whereas SYNDICATION means:

v.tr. To create a feed for (a website), allowing users to include content from the website in other websites or to view the content.

Definition of RSS:

RSS (Rich Site Summary) is a format for delivering regularly changing web content.

Simple Explanation:

In old days, regular users of internet had to check manually when a site was updated by visiting the site. Gradually people started to bookmark their favorite sites so they can check them for fresh material as often as possible. Some sites offered newsletters, but you had to disclose your email address and sometimes some other personal information for subscription.
RSS came to the rescue of privacy conscious and time smart people with its unique strategy.
For subscribing to RSS, you don't have to share any of your personal details. Second, you don't have to visit a site time and again to stay updated. Subscribe to a site's RSS feed anonymously, and as soon as it is updated, you'll get their fresh content right in your RSS aggregator.
You need an RSS feed aggregator to read RSS as it is just a text document which is not intelligible to a reader.

What Is an RSS Aggregator?

RSS aggregators are sites where you collect the RSS feeds of your favorite sites. As we told you, RSS is just a text document with weird letters. Aggregators understand them, and render them in human readable format.
If you look at the RSS feed file of Web Authority™, it looks like this:

Obviously, it's not readable for you, is it?
Now, here is how it looks my favorite RSS aggregator, The Old Reader:

Amazing, huh?

Steps to Getting the Best out of RSS:

  1. Register with some good RSS aggregator. (The Old Reader, free, is my personal favorite!)
  2. Pick up the RSS feed URL of the sites whose updates matter to you. If you don't have the RSS URL, the site's address will be enough. Most RSS aggregators automatically grab the RSS from the homepage address.
  3. That's it. Enjoy every bit of uptodate information right here without having to visit every site,
Share with Authority

Internet Authority Team

We just can't afford staying away from the internet. Nor can we live without sharing our findings. But unlike most tech bloggers out there, we focus on the utilitarian aspect of the modern technology. If it's useful, it's great. If not, it's the most absurd invention on earth! :)
