How to Type Really Fast - 12 Simple Rules

rules for typing fast - touch typing tips - how to type without looking at the keyboard
Typing is the modern replacement of writing. You simply can't expect, especially in the coming years if not already, to be a good student or employee if you can't touch type. And the faster you type, the better for your overall performance.

Fast Typing = Touch Typing

Hunt and peck typing, or the method in which you look for a particular key on the keyboard and then press it individually, doesn't work in today's fast-paced world anymore. You must learn touch typing for your online and offline written interactions as it saves a big lot of time and energy.

What Is Touch Typing?

Touch typing is the way you type when you don't look down at the keyboard for pressing keys, but have your fingers trained for typing as a reflex action.
Touch typing is all about automation. And this automation, or typing as a reflex action, involves practice, patience and technique.

12 Rules for Typing Fast

  1. Never look at the keyboard. Try to memorize where the keys are.
  2. Never rest your wrists and elbows on the keyboard or table. It will only slow down your movement on the keys.
  3. Sit straight, but avoid tension. Screen must be at the level of your eyes, the keyboard at the level of your elbows.
  4. Type accurately. Never ever set speed as your goal. Speed comes naturally. Accuracy needs hard work.
  5. Type with attention and focus. Inattentiveness won't take you anywhere.
  6. Type in frequent short spells instead of occasional long ones.
  7. Get your fingers back to home row immediately after you press a key up or down.
  8. Do some finger gymnastics after every fifteen minutes of typing.
  9. Correct the errors. Ignoring them means ignoring your chances for improvement.
  10. When you really feel like typing fast, develop a rhythm.
  11. Sorry for the repetition, but it is accuracy that will make you a fast typist, not speed. Paradoxical? That's how it is.
  12. Practice, practice, practice again till you succeed!

We just can't afford staying away from the internet. Nor can we live without sharing our findings. But unlike most tech bloggers out there, we focus on the utilitarian aspect of the modern technology. If it's useful, it's great. If not, it's the most absurd invention on earth! :)
